Do you buy products made locally? Is there anything made in your area that you love?
In my country, most of our products on the market are local, actually. Everything we prepare as far as food is concerned is 100% organic & 90% local (because we still import rice from Asia). Every morning the maid goes to the market to pick the fresh vegetables coming straight from farmers. We always buy exactly what we need, not more, nor less. You can be sure that everything you eat is healthy & full of vitamins.
The 2 first pictures are 2 of the most famous markets of Dakar, Sandaga & Kermel. I love particularly the Kermel market. I've always loved taking a walk there on Sunday although it was closed, because the architecture is so beautiful & also because it is located in one of the rare calm neighborhood of the center of Dakar.
Other than food, you can find incense & other aphrodisiac products you will only find in Senegal & nowhere else ;)
Here you have a picture of a woman selling her fruits. Always fresh of course & always with a smile :)... unless you try buy her merchandise for way less than what it worth.
Our favorite sport in Senegal is bargaining. If you plan on doing some shopping, I advise you to take a strong breakfast & drink enough water, because be sure that you will spend 3 hours just to get a pair of sandals at the lowest price possible :p
Just a tip: always propose less than half of the price of the item. You can do that almost everywhere, but to the grocery store and the supermarket of course :p
Here you have more fresh vegetables & fruits
For special occasions such as wedding & religious events we don't buy clothes to shops. Everything we wear is customized. We have our fashion icons who make us look the most beautiful men & women of Africa.
One of them, introduced elegant women to silky dresses.
Diouma Dieng Diakhaté is a pioneer in Senegalese fashion world. She is the best! Isn't she beautiful?
She inspired a lot of young talents to reveal themselves. It feels good to see that the youth is taking more initiative & are contributing to show the world how Senegalese women are divine.
Next time I go back home, I promise I will share glamorous pictures of me in one of those hot dresses. ;) :p
If you come as a tourist, I'm sure you will enjoy buying all these tissues & statutes. (I've never understood why tourists were running on these stuff)
You will have fun riding in these cars/ buses???...whatever. But don't do it too often. You might end up with terrible back aches if you ride too long in Car Rapides. You talk about a local stuff. I mean, I don't even know what these cars are. I know that the "Peugeot" logo is fake, because it's just added during the customization. We've been pimping rides way before X-hibit been thinking about it.
My theory is that Fast Cars (lol) are actually old short buses pimped. but they still look terrible. I've never seen a new Car Rapide of my whole life.
Let me offer you some flowers before letting you go & plan your holiday trips to Senegal :)
Always with the smile :)
We are not touched by the side effects of globalization yet & I don't think we'll reach a level where we'll have to do anything to save our traditional habits. Being a developing country has its good side :)
Unfortunately, Chinese are infesting our market with their wrecked merchandises. It's a bit sad, but oh well....
Voilà! This was my little introduction to the real side of my country. For more don't hesitate going there.
